Fashion journalism is a specialized branch of fashion media. It focuses on professional writing and photojournalism. Journalists in this field do more than just describe clothing. They critique fashion events and analyze new trends. They also work to cultivate and maintain relationships with designers and stylists. These professionals may work full-time for a specific publication. Others operate as freelancers by submitting articles to various outlets.

The work involves several specific professional mechanisms. First, journalists report on the latest trends and events. They often use fashion photography to tell their stories. This type of photojournalism replaced fashion illustration during the 1900s. In the modern era, the process has become much more fluid. Digital journalism allows writers to use unlimited space. They are no longer restricted by the layout of a physical magazine. Writers can now include many images and links to external resources. Digital platforms also allow for real-time updates to correct misinformation.

There are different types of fashion journalism practitioners today. Professional journalists work for major established brands. These include publications like Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and Paper Magazine. These large companies have altered their business models to include online components. In contrast, the internet has also enabled amateur fashion journalism. This includes individuals who create content through blogs or vlogs. These amateur outlets allow people to share their perspectives outside of traditional media structures.

The history of this field traces back to the 18th century. Before magazines, people used fashion dolls to display relevant ensembles. These dolls were eventually replaced by fashion magazines. The Cabinet des Modes is recognized as the first true fashion magazine. It was a partisan publication that used illustrated fashion plates. These plates helped satisfy a growing appetite for French fashion. This interest grew as urban populations wanted to separate themselves from the French Court.

Following the French model, other countries developed their own publications. Germany saw the rise of Journal des Luxus und der Moden between 1786 and 1827. In Milan, the Giornale delle Dame e delle Mode di Francia ran from 1786 to 1794. Britain published the Gallery of Fashion from 1794 to 1803. During the 19th century, many magazines employed journalists to report on Paris trends. Notable early British figures included Ann Margaret Lanchester and Mary Ann Bell. Bell wrote for the publication La Belle Assemblée in the early 19th century.

Many notable individuals have achieved great success in this profession. Robin Givhan was the first fashion journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. She gained attention by discussing how political leaders present themselves through clothing. Vanessa Friedman serves as the chief fashion director for The New York Times. She previously worked for the Financial Times and InStyle UK. She has received both the Front Page Award and the Fashion Monitor Journalist of the Year award. Cathy Horyn is a critic-at-large for The Cut and has won the Eugenia Sheppard Award. Sarah Mower MBE is a columnist for American Vogue and an ambassador for emerging talent. Suzy Menkes OBE is a veteran who has worked for Vogue International and The New York Times.

Education is a vital component for those entering this field. Journalism is a general liberal arts major studied at many universities. Some fashion schools offer a specific concentration in fashion journalism. Most journalists need at least a Bachelor of Arts degree. Common fields of study include journalism, communications, or fashion. Beyond a degree, a strong portfolio is essential for post-graduate hiring. A portfolio serves as a collection of reporting experience that proves a writer's skill to employers.
