Based in New York City, the publication serves as a guide for style and lifestyle. While fashion remains a primary pillar, the magazine covers a wide array of interests. These include food, movies, fitness, music, travel, and technology. It also explores topics like books, celebrities, and sports. By blending these subjects, GQ acts as a comprehensive cultural resource for its readers.

The magazine's operational history began in 1931 under the name Apparel Arts. It originally functioned as a trade publication for the clothing industry. The primary audience consisted of wholesale buyers and retail sellers. These industry insiders used the magazine to stay informed about clothing trends. They then used that knowledge to advise their own customers. This specific focus helped shape the early stages of men's fashion media.

As the publication evolved, it underwent several significant transformations. In 1957, it transitioned from a trade magazine into a quarterly publication for men. By 1958, the word "Apparel" was removed from the logo. The name Gentlemen's Quarterly was established during this period. In 1967, the magazine was rebranded as GQ. The publication frequency increased again in 1970, moving from a quarterly to a monthly schedule. These changes marked its shift from a business tool to a mainstream lifestyle brand.

Key editorial figures have steered the magazine's direction through different eras. In 1979, Condé Nast acquired the publication. During this time, editor Art Cooper expanded the content beyond simple fashion. He helped establish GQ as a general men's magazine that could compete with Esquire. In 1984, Nonnie Moore joined as the fashion editor. She had previously worked at Mademoiselle and Harper's Bazaar. Her background helped her create a more varied and approachable visual style for the pages. Later, in 2018, Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing while writing for the magazine.

GQ has also been a central figure in discussing modern social trends. The magazine is often associated with the concept of metrosexuality. This term was coined by writer Mark Simpson in an article for The Independent. Simpson noted that men's style press, including GQ, helped promote this trend. These publications featured images of young men wearing fashionable clothes and accessories. This media coverage influenced how young men viewed style and self-presentation. The magazine's reach continues through various international editions and digital expansions.

The brand maintains a significant global presence through awards and digital commerce. The Men of the Year awards began in the United States in 1996. These awards are featured in special issues to recognize notable individuals. Other international versions have followed this tradition. Australia launched its version in 2007, while the UK launched in 2009. India followed in 2010, and Spain and Brazil launched in 2011. In 2020, the brand expanded further by launching the GQ Shop, an online webstore for merchandise.

Despite its success, the magazine has faced various public controversies. In 2009, a report on the 1999 Russian apartment bombings caused tension. The article by Scott Anderson included interviews with Mikhail Trepashkin, a former Russian colonel. The findings contradicted official government explanations. In 2010, a photoshoot involving cast members from the show Glee drew criticism from parents. Additionally, a 2018 article titled "21 Books You Don't Have to Read" sparked backlash. The editors included famous works like the Bible and The Lord of the Rings in their list of overrated books. These moments highlight the magazine's influential and sometimes provocative role in public discourse.

Today, GQ remains a major player in the global media landscape. In the first half of 2019, the magazine reported an average worldwide paid circulation of 934,000. While this was a slight decrease from previous years, its reach remains vast. British GQ also maintains a strong following, with a circulation of over 100,000 in 2019. Through its print issues, digital content, and spinoffs like GQ Style, the brand continues to connect fashion with broader cultural movements.
