It is based in New York City. The magazine first started in 1931. Back then, it was called Apparel Arts. It was made for people who sold clothes. Later, the name changed to Gentlemen's Quarterly. In 1967, it became known as GQ.

Today, the magazine covers much more than just clothes. It shares stories about movies, music, and food. It also talks about travel, books, and sports. Some people use it to learn about new styles. In 1984, an editor named Nonnie Moore helped change the look. She made the pages more exciting and varied for men.

GQ also gives out special awards. They name Men of the Year in a special issue. This started in the United States in 1996. Other countries like India, Spain, and Brazil do this too. In 2020, the magazine even started its own online shop. This lets readers buy items designed by the staff. It is a big part of how men share their culture.
