It first came out in October 1933. Three men started it: Arnold Gingrich, David A. Smart, and Henry L. Jackson. They each had a special job. Gingrich focused on publishing. Smart led the business side. Jackson led the fashion section. For the first fifteen years, fashion was most of the magazine.

In the 1960s, the magazine led a new way of writing. This was called New Journalism. It used many famous writers. The magazine also had a cartoon character named Esky. Esky appeared on many covers for over 25 years. In the 1990s, the magazine faced hard times. Fewer people were buying it. Later, a leader named David Granger changed the magazine. He made it focus more on lifestyle. Esquire has many international versions too. It is now published by Hearst. It still tells stories about news, fashion, and books.
