Kerry Francis Bullmore Packer was a dominant figure in Australian media and business during the twentieth century. As a media tycoon, he controlled vast networks that shaped how information reached the public. His family holdings included the Nine Network and the publishing company Australian Consolidated Press. These entities eventually merged to create Publishing and Broadcasting Limited, known as PBL. Packer was not just a media owner; he was one of the wealthiest and most influential men in Australia. His reach extended into various industries, from tourism to heavy engineering.

Packer's business mechanism relied on controlling major shares in large corporations. Through his company, Consolidated Press Holdings, he maintained a 37% holding in PBL. This ownership allowed him to direct the operations of television networks and magazine publishers. He also managed diverse investments, such as the Crown Casino in Melbourne and the Perisher Blue ski resort. His business empire was vast, including coal mines, diamond exploration, and telecommunications. He even held a 75% stake in the Perisher Blue ski resort, showing his interest in land and tourism.

His business life was characterized by several distinct stages and strategic moves. One legendary moment occurred in the late 1980s involving the Nine Network. In 1987, Packer sold the network to Alan Bond for $1.2 billion. Three years later, in 1990, he bought the network back for only $250 million. This transaction was a massive financial success. He also experimented with radio by forming the Commonwealth Broadcasting Corporation. This venture linked two stations, 2UE in Sydney and 3AK in Melbourne, for a six-month period in 1986.

Packer's path to leadership was shaped by family history and unexpected changes. He was not the original successor intended to lead the family empire. His father, Sir Frank Packer, had planned for Kerry's older brother, Clyde, to take over. However, Clyde fell out with their father in the early 1970s and moved to America permanently. Following Sir Frank's death in 1974, Kerry inherited the family estate, which was valued at $100 million. He began his career at the very bottom, working on the loading dock of The Telegraph newspaper.

Financial figures highlight the massive scale of his wealth and influence. By 2004, Business Review Weekly estimated his net worth at $4.6 billion. While he was a brilliant businessman, some analysts noted he was not a self-made man. His grandfather, Robert Clyde Packer, and his father built the foundation of the empire. Critics pointed out that if his $100 million inheritance had been invested in the top 200 Australian companies in 1974, it could have grown to $11 billion by 2005. This comparison shows the enormous potential of the capital he managed.

Packer is also famous for his impact on international sports, specifically cricket. In 1977, he founded World Series Cricket to secure broadcasting rights. This move caused a major confrontation with the global cricket establishment. To win his legal battles, Packer hired ten of the best Queen's Counsels in the UK. He kept them on retainers to ensure his opponents could not use the best legal minds. He also attempted to influence rugby through the World Rugby Corporation in 1995. This project aimed to create a professional worldwide rugby union competition.

His career was often marked by controversy and intense public interest. He faced a 1991 Australian government inquiry regarding the print media industry. During this inquiry, he famously expressed his reluctance to appear before politicians. He also faced criticism regarding tax-minimization schemes used by his corporations. Despite these challenges, his influence remained strong until his death in December 2005. His legacy continues through the media structures he helped build and the way sports are broadcast globally today.
