To manage its vast empire, LVMH uses a specific organizational structure. The company controls around 60 subsidiaries. These subsidiaries manage a total of 75 different luxury brands. Most of these brands are managed independently. This allows each brand to maintain its own unique identity and style. LVMH organizes these businesses under six distinct branches. These branches are Fashion Group, Wines and Spirits, Perfumes and Cosmetics, Watches and Jewelry, Selective Distribution, and Other Activities. This structure allows the conglomerate to oversee many different industries at once.

The history of LVMH began with a major merger in 1987. This merger joined the fashion house Louis Vuitton with Moët Hennessy. Louis Vuitton was founded much earlier, in 1854. Moët Hennessy was itself the result of a 1971 merger. That merger combined the champagne producer Moët & Chandon, founded in 1743, with the cognac producer Hennessy, founded in 1765. Following the merger, a conflict arose between leaders Alain Chevalier and Henry Racamier. Racamier invited Bernard Arnault to invest in the company. Arnault eventually took control of LVMH from the original family owners. He has served as the chairman and CEO since January 1989.

LVMH has grown significantly through many large acquisitions. In 2011, the company announced it would acquire the Italian jeweler Bulgari. This transaction was worth approximately $5.2 billion. In 2021, LVMH completed the purchase of Tiffany & Co. for nearly $16 billion. This followed a complicated legal dispute regarding the deal during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the company acquired Swiza, the owner of the Swiss manufacturer L'Epée 1839. This brand is known for high-end clocks and horological creations. In 2025, it was disclosed that LVMH was named in Giorgio Armani's will. The will names LVMH as a preferred buyer for a minority stake in the company.

Beyond luxury goods, LVMH has a significant presence in the media industry. The company owns the Les Echos-Le Parisien Group. This media subsidiary includes several newspapers and publications. It owns the financial newspaper Les Echos, which Arnault bought in 2007. It also owns the newspapers Le Parisien and Aujourd’hui en France. In 2024, the group also acquired the French weekly publication Paris Match. This diversification into media shows how the conglomerate operates across different sectors of society. By owning both the brands and the media that covers them, LVMH maintains a very broad reach.
