Vertical integration means the company controls many different stages of its business. They design, produce, and market ophthalmic lenses and prescription glasses. They also create sunglasses and specialized equipment for eye doctors. This company is a dominant force in the global eyewear market. It acts as a single entity that manages everything from manufacturing to retail. This structure allows them to oversee the entire process of vision care.

The company operates through several distinct business sectors. First, they focus on lens technologies. They own many proprietary methods for making lenses, such as Varilux and Transitions. Second, they manage a massive portfolio of eyewear brands. This includes famous names like Ray-Ban, Oakley, and Persol. Third, they operate a vast retail network. They own many of the largest eyewear chains in the world. Finally, they handle licensing and diagnostic tools. They make eyewear for many fashion houses and own diagnostic instruments like those from Heidelberg Engineering.

The history of the company began with a major merger. In January 2017, the French company Essilor and the Italian company Luxottica announced they would join. This merger required approval from authorities in the United States, the European Union, Brazil, Canada, and China. On October 1, 2018, EssilorLuxottica was officially created. Technically, Essilor acquired Luxottica. However, Luxottica's founder, Leonardo Del Vecchio, became a co-leader. He was designated as the chairman of the new corporation. This merger combined the world's leading lens manufacturer with the world's leading eyeglass manufacturer.

This merger was not without internal conflict. For several years, the company faced a leadership battle. This struggle occurred between the old Essilor leadership and Del Vecchio. The dispute involved disagreements over control and management styles. In 2019, Del Vecchio and Essilor CEO Hubert Sagnières traded accusations. Eventually, Del Vecchio won the support of the shareholders. He appointed Francesco Milleri as the new CEO. This resolution allowed the company to move forward with a unified vision. Del Vecchio later noted that this fulfilled his dream of creating a dominant eyewear company.

The scale of EssilorLuxottica is revealed through its significant financial figures. In 2025, the company generated €28.491 billion in revenue. The merger originally created a company with a market capitalization of €57 billion. Their retail presence is also enormous. Sunglass Hut is their largest chain, with 3,131 locations as of 2025. Other major chains include Óticas Carol with 1,425 locations and LensCrafters with 1,098 locations. They even expanded into streetwear by purchasing the brand Supreme for US$1.5 billion in 2024.

There are many surprising ways the company interacts with the world. They hold exclusive manufacturing licensing deals with many luxury fashion houses. This includes brands like Armani, Chanel, Prada, and Versace. They also work with brands like Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Tiffany & Co. Beyond fashion, they are expanding into new technology. After Del Vecchio's death in 2022, the company began looking at hearing aid technology. They acquired the Israeli startup Nuance Hearing to help with this expansion. This shows how they are moving from just eyewear into broader sensory technology.

EssilorLuxottica is deeply connected to the global economy and the medical field. The company is listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange. It is part of the CAC 40 index and the Euro Stoxx 50. These indices include the largest and most important companies in their respective regions. By combining medical science with fashion, they influence how billions of people see the world. They bridge the gap between healthcare and consumer retail. This makes them a central player in both the medical and fashion industries.
