His most famous feature is the red sole. This is the bright red bottom of the shoe. He discovered this look by accident. He was working on a drawing inspired by Andy Warhol. He felt the black sole was too plain. An assistant was sitting nearby painting her nails red. He grabbed her red nail polish and painted the sole. This became his signature style. The specific red color he uses is called Pantone 18-1663 TPX. It is now a very famous look in fashion.

Louboutin had an interesting path to success. He was born in Paris in 1964. As a teenager, he traveled to Egypt and India. He returned to Paris in 1981 with many drawings. He worked for the house Charles Jourdan. Later, he was an apprentice for Roger Vivier. Vivier was the person who invented the modern stiletto. Louboutin also worked for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent. He eventually opened his own shoe salon in Paris in 1991. His first customer was Princess Caroline of Monaco.

Today, his brand is a huge global business. He sells shoes, handbags, perfumes, and makeup. Most of his money comes from selling shoes. About 52 percent of his sales are in the United States. He has 420 staff members called "Loubi's Angels." Many of his shoes are made in a factory in Milan. He also has a small workshop in Paris for special items. Some shoes cost $500, but others cost $6,000. Custom pairs can cost $4,000 or more.

Many famous people love his designs. Celebrities like Madonna and Jennifer Lopez wear them. Sarah Jessica Parker even wore his shoes for her wedding. One famous writer, Danielle Steel, owns over 6,000 pairs. Because his red soles are so special, there have been legal battles. He fought to protect his trademark in many countries. In the United States, a judge ruled on a case with Yves Saint Laurent. The rule is that Louboutin owns the red sole if the rest of the shoe is a different color. This helps keep his unique style special.
