She is often called the first celebrated French fashion designer. Bertin helped make fashion a major part of popular culture. Her work helped establish France as the center of the fashion world. Because of her, dresses made in Paris were sent everywhere. They traveled to places like London, Venice, and even Saint Petersburg. She was a very powerful figure in the world of style.

Bertin created many different and amazing looks for her clients. She made huge, fancy gowns that took up a lot of space. These dresses made the women wearing them look very imposing. Some of her creations were incredibly heavy and difficult to move. For the Queen's coronation, the robes were so heavy they needed a stretcher.

She also designed the chemise à la Reine. This was a lighter, free-flowing gown made of white silk or cotton.

Bertin's career began with hard work and learning. She was born in Abbeville, France, in 1747. When she was only nine years old, she started an apprenticeship. She learned from a fashion merchant named Victoire Barbier. Later, she moved to Paris to work with Mademoiselle Pagelle. In 1770, Bertin opened her own shop called Le Grand Mogol.

Her shop eventually moved to 26 Rue de Richelieu.

Her most famous client was Queen Marie Antoinette. Bertin met the Queen in the summer of 1774. They became very close friends and talked about fashion for hours. Bertin even helped create the famous "pouf" hairstyles. These were very tall hair styles that could reach three feet high.

People decorated these styles with objects like ships or even news scenes. Bertin also made fashion dolls called Pandores to show off new styles.

These Pandores were small or large dolls made of wax or porcelain. They acted like messengers for new fashion trends across Europe. Bertin lived through a very busy and changing time in France. She stayed loyal to the Queen even during the French Revolution. Even when the Queen was in prison, Bertin still received small orders. Her life shows how much influence a talented designer can have.
