This marriage was meant to help France and Austria become friends. After the wedding in 1770, she moved to France. She changed her name to the French version, Marie Antoinette. She had to learn new ways to walk and dress for the French court. A teacher taught her to walk with a gliding style. She even had her teeth straightened by a French dentist. These changes helped her fit in with the royal life at Versailles.

In 1774, her husband became King Louis XVI. This meant Marie Antoinette became the Queen of France.

Some people blamed Marie Antoinette for these problems. They called her "Madame Déficit" because they thought her spending caused the debt. People also spread many false stories about her. One false story involved a famous diamond necklace. These rumors hurt her reputation with the French people. During the French Revolution, things became even more difficult for the royal family. They were eventually moved to the Tuileries Palace under house arrest.

History changed quickly during the Revolution. In 1792, France decided to become a republic. This meant they no longer wanted a king or queen.
