It began in 1789 and lasted until 1799. This period changed how people thought about power and rights. Many of its ideas are still important for democracy today. The revolution happened because the old way of ruling failed. France faced many social and economic problems that leaders could not fix. These problems led to a massive struggle for control of the country.

Many things caused this crisis to happen. The population grew from 21 million to 28 million people. While some grew rich, many others struggled to survive. Bad harvests in 1787 and 1788 made food very expensive. People also faced high unemployment and rising prices. The government had a lot of debt from wars.

Taxes were also a big problem. The rich often did not pay them, so the poor had to pay more. This made many people feel very angry.

In May 1789, the King called a meeting called the Estates General.

Things became much more intense after that. The monarchy lost its power, and France became a republic.
