This group rose to power during a very difficult time for France. The country was fighting a war against the Prussian army. The French army lost this war, and the old leaders were gone. This left many people in Paris feeling angry and alone. They wanted a new way to run their city and their lives.

The Commune worked by making many new rules for the people. They wanted to help the working class, who were often very poor. They stopped children from working in factories, which is called child labor. They also said workers could take over a business if the owner left. One rule even let people keep their tools if they had been left at a pawnshop.

They also wanted to separate the church from the government. Because of this, they closed many Catholic churches and schools in the city.

This movement grew from many different groups of people. Some were socialists, and some were called anarchists.

The history of the Commune is full of specific dates and numbers. It began on 18 March 1871 when the National Guard took control. The National Guard was a large group of about 300,000 people.

Some estimates say between 10,000 and 15,000 people died during this period.

Even though the Commune ended quickly, its ideas stayed alive. Famous thinkers like Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels studied what happened in Paris.

They used the Commune as an example of how workers might rule. Many leaders had to flee to places like England or Belgium to stay safe. Later, in 1880, many people were allowed to come back home. The story of the Paris Commune still helps people understand how governments can change.
