The First International was a very important political group. It was officially called the International Workingmen's Association. This group wanted to bring different political groups together. They focused on the working class and the struggle for fairness.

Many people joined to help workers in different countries. This helped create a sense of global unity among workers. It was a major step for the labor movement.

The group worked by holding large meetings called congresses. These meetings allowed different leaders to talk and vote.

They debated big ideas about how to run society. Some members wanted to use government power to help. Other members wanted to avoid government power entirely. These debates helped shape the ideas of socialism and anarchism. The group used a central committee called the General Council to lead. This council helped organize the many different members.

Many years before the group formed, people tried to unite. In 1844, a group called the Fraternal Democrats started in London. They used the motto "All men are brethren."

Later, in the 1850s, a committee in London helped keep these ideas alive. These early groups acted as models for the First International. They showed that workers from different lands could work together. This history helped lead to the big meeting in 1864.

A huge meeting happened on September 28, 1864, in London. It was held at St Martin's Hall. About 2,000 workers attended this important event.

Karl Marx was a very important person there. He wrote the rules and the first address for the group. He also helped lead the General Council. Other leaders included George Odger and Henri Tolain. The group faced many fights between different factions. One group followed Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, while another followed Mikhail Bakunin.

The First International changed how people thought about politics. It helped create the foundations for communism and anarchism.

Even though the group split apart, its ideas lived on. It helped lead to the Second International in 1889. This new group was made of national social democratic parties. The First International proved that workers could organize across borders. It remains a key part of history for many people today.
