Sergei Nechaev was a Russian communist who lived in the 1800s. He was a key part of the Russian nihilist movement. This group wanted to change how society worked. Nechaev was known for his very intense ideas. He believed a revolution could be won by any means. This included using terror to reach his goals. He wanted to destroy the church and the state.

Nechaev lived a very strict and simple life. He often lived on only black bread. He even slept on bare wood to show his dedication. He wrote a famous book called the Catechism of a Revolutionary. This book explained his main rule for followers. He believed the ends justify the means. This meant the goal was more important than how you acted. This idea influenced many radical groups later in history.

Nechaev grew up in a small town called Ivanovo. His father was a waiter and a sign painter. Nechaev learned these trades when he was ten years old. His family paid for tutors to teach him many subjects. He studied Latin, German, French, history, and math. Later, he moved to Moscow and then to Saint Petersburg. There, he worked as a teacher at a parish school.

In 1869, Nechaev moved to Geneva, Switzerland. He met a famous revolutionary named Mikhail Bakunin there. Bakunin thought Nechaev was the voice of Russian youth. Nechaev and his allies sent leaflets to Russia to stir up support. They sent 560 parcels to 387 different people. However, Nechaev also did very harmful things to his own group. In November 1869, he and others killed a man named Ivanov. They hid the body in a lake under the ice.

After the murder, Nechaev fled back to Switzerland. He tried to work with other leaders like Ogarev. He even used blackmail to control his fellow exiles. This caused many people to turn against him. The International Workingmen's Association eventually expelled him. In August 1872, police arrested him in Zürich. He was sent back to Russia to face a court. He was sentenced to twenty years of hard labor. Nechaev died while serving his time in prison.
