He was born in Moscow in 1842. His family was very wealthy and had many lands. As a boy, he attended a special school called the Page Corps. This school trained young men to serve the Tsar. Later, he became an officer in the military. He traveled to Siberia to study the earth and its mountains. Kropotkin was a very smart man who loved learning. He wanted to use his life to help other people.

Kropotkin did important work as a geographer in Siberia. He led trips to explore the wild mountains and lands. In 1866, he went on an expedition to the Vitim area. He discovered that much of Siberia was actually a large plateau. A plateau is a high area of land that is mostly flat. This was a big discovery for science. It even helped people find gold in the Lena fields. Because of this work, he won a gold medal. He even had a mountain range named after him.

Kropotkin also had very strong ideas about how people should live together. He believed in a way of life called anarchist communism. This means he thought people could live without a central government. He wanted small groups to rule themselves by choice. He thought workers should run their own factories. People should share their work and their goods based on what they need. He wrote many books to explain these ideas. Two of his famous books are "The Conquest of Bread" and "Fields, Factories, and Workshops."

His ideas caused many problems with the leaders in Russia. Because he wanted change, the government arrested him in 1874. He was kept in a prison called the Peter and Paul Fortress. Kropotkin managed to escape from prison in 1876. After that, he lived in exile for many years. Exile means being forced to live far away from your home. He lived in Switzerland, France, and England. He spent much of this time writing and giving lectures. He even worked on a famous encyclopedia.

Kropotkin finally returned to Russia after the Russian Revolution in 1917. However, he was not happy with the new government there. He lived until 1921 and left behind many important writings. His scientific work helped us understand the Ice Age and glaciers. His political work changed how people thought about freedom. Even today, people still study his books and his life.
