Sergei grew up in a small town. His father was a painter. Sergei learned to paint signs too. He studied many subjects like math and history. Later, he became a teacher.

Sergei had very strong ideas. He wrote a book called the Catechism of a Revolutionary. This book said that people must do anything to change society. He believed the end goal was more important than being kind.

He worked with other rebels. He even met a famous leader named Mikhail Bakunin. But Sergei was often very harsh. He did bad things to his own friends. In 1869, he was part of a group that killed a man named Ivanov. This caused many people to turn against him.

Other leaders told him he could not join them. In 1872, police caught him in Switzerland. They sent him back to Russia. A court gave him twenty years of hard labor. He died while he was in prison.
