He also helped start a group called the Narodniks. These people wanted to help the working people in Russia. His ideas were very powerful for his time.

Chernyshevsky had a very specific way of looking at the world. He believed that art should act like a textbook for life. To him, art should show real life to help mankind. He thought science and art should both explain our reality. He also believed that the masses of people make history happen. He saw struggle between different classes as a way for society to move forward. He wanted a new kind of society based on peasant communes.

His life began in the city of Saratov in 1828. His father was a priest, but Nikolay became an atheist. He studied many languages at a local seminary. These included English, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek. Later, he graduated from Saint Petersburg University in 1850. He worked as a teacher at the Saratov Gymnasium from 1851 to 1853. Eventually, he became the chief editor of a magazine called "The Contemporary."

In 1862, Nikolay was arrested and held in the Peter and Paul Fortress. While he was there, he wrote his most famous novel. It was called "What Is to Be Done?" This book had a hero named Rakhmetov. Many people tried to act just like him. Some even tried to live very simple and disciplined lives. Because of his writing, he was sentenced to prison and exile. He spent many years in Vilyuisk, Siberia.
