As a young boy, Berlin lived in Petrograd. While living there, he saw the Russian Revolution happen. He watched crowds of protesters marching in the streets. These experiences made him dislike violence for the rest of his life. He always believed in the importance of protecting people's rights.

When he was eleven, his family moved to England in 1921. At first, Berlin did not know how to speak English. However, he learned the language very quickly by the time he was twelve. He went to school at St Paul's School in London. Later, he studied at Oxford University. He was a very talented student at Corpus Christi College. He even won the John Locke Prize for his work in philosophy. He was the first unconverted Jew to win a special fellowship at All Souls College.

Berlin worked in many important roles throughout his life. During the Second World War, he worked for the British Diplomatic Service. He spent time in New York City and Washington, D.C. In 1957, he became a professor at the University of Oxford. He also helped start a new place called Wolfson College in 1966.

He served as the president of the British Academy from 1974 to 1978. He received many honors, including being knighted in 1957. He also won the Jerusalem Prize in 1979 for defending civil liberties.

Many people still study Berlin's ideas today. He wrote about something called value pluralism. This is the idea that people have many different values that can sometimes clash. He also wrote a lot about liberal theory. His work helps us understand how to protect freedom in a complicated world. Even though he lived in England for a long time, he always called himself a Russian Jew. He died in Oxford in 1997 at the age of 88. His many lectures and books continue to inspire new thinkers.
