John Rogers Searle was a well-known American philosopher.

He spent his career studying how language works and how the mind functions. He was born in Denver on July 31, 1932. His father worked as an electrical engineer for AT&T. His mother was a physician. He studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison before moving to England. He earned all his university degrees at the University of Oxford. These included his BA, MA, and DPhil. Later, he became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught there for many years until 2019.

Searle became famous for his work on something called speech acts. This is the idea that saying words is a way of doing things. He looked at how we use rules to make our meaning clear. For example, he studied the difference between a statement and a command. A statement like "Sam smokes" just gives information. A command like "Sam, smoke!" is a way of telling someone what to do. He used the idea of "direction of fit" to explain this. A statement tries to make words match the world. A command tries to make the world match the words.

One of his most famous ideas is the "Chinese room" argument. This idea is used to talk about artificial intelligence. He wanted to show that computers might not think the same way humans do. He also wrote about a concept called "intentionality." To him, this is the power of the mind to represent things in the world. He argued that this power is something only minds have. He believed that having a mind is different from just following computer rules. This work helped him win many important honors. He received the National Humanities Medal in 2004. He also won the Mind & Brain Prize in 2006.

Searle also introduced a very interesting idea called the "Background." This refers to the things we know without having to think about them. For instance, if someone asks you to "cut the cake," you know to use a knife. You do not need a rule to tell you that a lawnmower is the wrong tool. This knowledge is part of our natural abilities and brain structures. He called this the set of capacities that help us act appropriately. It is like a silent foundation for everything we do. Without this background, it would be very hard to understand any conversation.

Throughout his life, Searle was involved in many different activities. He was part of the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley in the 1960s. He also dealt with local laws regarding rent in the city of Berkeley. In his later years, the university changed his status. This happened after he was found to have violated policies regarding sexual harassment. Even with these difficult events, his ideas remain a major part of philosophy. Many thinkers still study his views on the mind and language today. His work continues to spark big debates among students and professors.
