John Searle was a famous American thinker.

He spent his life studying big ideas. He focused on how we use language. He also studied how the mind works.

Searle studied at the University of Oxford. Later, he taught at UC Berkeley. He won many awards for his work. One was the National Humanities Medal. He also won the Mind & Brain Prize.

One of his most famous ideas is the "Chinese room." This idea looks at how computers think. He used it to argue about artificial intelligence. He believed that minds are special.

Searle also wrote about how we act. He used a term called the "Background." This refers to things we know without thinking. For example, we know a knife cuts cake. We do not need a rule to tell us this. Our brains just know how to act.

In his later years, the university took back his status. This was because of his actions toward a student. He was found to have broken school rules. Even so, his ideas changed how people think about the mind.
