He was born in 1937. He grew up in New York. He studied at Cornell and Oxford. He also earned a degree from Harvard.

Nagel asks deep questions about the mind. He wrote a famous paper in 1974. It is called "What Is It Like to Be a Bat?" He wonders how we know what it feels like to be something else. He says science is a great way to learn. But he thinks science has limits. Science looks at the world from the outside. It uses math and facts. However, it might miss how we feel on the inside. This is called a subjective view. It is how we see things from our own point of view.

Nagel taught at many big schools. He taught at Princeton and Berkeley. He also taught at New York University. He thinks we will learn more about the mind soon. He hopes for a new way to understand how minds work. This would link our thoughts to the physical world.
