Donald Davidson was a famous American thinker. He was born in 1917. He lived in many places. He even lived in the Philippines. He went to a big school called Harvard. He met many smart friends there. One friend was a man named W. V. O. Quine. Quine was a very big influence on him.

Davidson taught at the University of California, Berkeley. He also taught at other schools. He had many big ideas. One idea was about the mind and the body. He called this anomalous monism. He thought that mental events are physical events. For example, a thought is a pattern in the brain. But he said we cannot use physical laws to explain thoughts.

He also had a famous story called Swampman. In this story, a man is hit by lightning. A copy of the man is made from a tree. The copy looks just like him. But Davidson said the copy has no real thoughts. This is because the copy has no history with the world. He died in 2003 at age 86.
