Hilary Putnam was a very important American thinker. He lived from 1926 to 2016. He studied many different subjects like math and science. He was also a philosopher. This means he spent his life asking big questions. He looked at how we think and how we speak. He even worked in computer science. He helped create the Davis–Putnam algorithm with Martin Davis. This helps solve a math problem called Boolean satisfiability.

Putnam had many famous ideas about the mind. He thought about how our brains and bodies work together. He argued against a theory called type-identity. This theory said that every mental state is just a physical state. Putnam thought this was not quite right. He came up with an idea called multiple realizability. This means different physical things can have the same mental feeling. For example, a human and a robot might both feel pain. Their bodies are different, but the feeling is the same.

He also used special stories to test his ideas. These are called thought experiments. One famous story is about a brain in a vat. This story asks if we can really know what is real.

Putnam also worked on how words have meaning. He and Saul Kripke helped create the causal theory of reference. He even used a story about a "Twin Earth" to explain his ideas. He also worked with W. V. Quine on math ideas. They argued that math is a real part of our world.

Putnam's life was full of many different places and people. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. His family moved to France when he was very young. He actually spoke French first! Later, he moved to Philadelphia in the U.S. He went to school at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. He also taught at many big schools like MIT and Princeton. He spent a long time teaching at Harvard University. He was even a professor at the University of Amsterdam.

Putnam was a person who was always learning and changing. He was famous for testing his own ideas very hard. If he found a mistake in his thinking, he would change his mind. This made him a very honest thinker. He also cared a lot about the world around him. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement. He also cared about his Jewish faith. He and his wife, Ruth Anna, even celebrated their bar and bat mitzvahs later in life. He believed that teachers have a big job to help society.
