Marvin Minsky was a famous American mathematician. He spent his life studying how machines might think. He is often called one of the "fathers of AI." AI stands for artificial intelligence. This is the science of making computers smart.

Minsky wanted to understand the human mind. He believed we could use math to model the brain. His work helped start a whole new field of science. This field looks at how computers can learn and solve problems.

Many of Minsky's ideas worked by looking at small parts. He believed intelligence comes from many small, simple parts working together. He called this the "Society of Mind" theory. He got this idea while trying to build a robot. The robot used a camera and a computer to play with blocks.

He also built SNARC in 1951. This was a machine that used wires to act like a brain. It was one of the first machines to learn like a living thing.

Learning about Minsky starts with his time in school. He was born in New York City on August 9, 1927. He studied math at Harvard and Princeton. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1945. After the war, he finished his studies. In 1954, he earned his Ph.D. from Princeton. He wrote about how brain models might work. This helped him prepare for his long career in science.

Most of Minsky's work happened at MIT. He joined the faculty there in 1958. He and John McCarthy started the MIT AI laboratory. Minsky invented many useful tools. In 1957, he helped create the confocal microscope. This tool helps scientists see very tiny things clearly. He also made a head-mounted display in 1963. These inventions helped many other scientists do their jobs. He stayed at MIT until he passed away in 2016.

We see Minsky's influence in many places today. His ideas about robots and smart machines are everywhere. He even advised on the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. A character in that movie was named after him. He won many great honors for his smart thinking. In 1969, he won the ACM Turing Award. This is a very high prize in computer science. He also won the Japan Prize in 1990. His work changed how we think about the future of technology.
