Andrew Yao is a famous scientist who studies how information moves. He works in physics and computer science. Physics is the study of how the world works. Computer science is the study of how computers think and solve problems. He is a leader in these fields.

His work helps us understand the math behind technology. This makes our modern world much better.

He studies how computers handle hard jobs. One way he does this is by looking at complexity. Complexity helps us see how much work a computer must do. He also studies algorithms. An algorithm is a set of steps to finish a task.

Yao used math to find Yao's principle. This principle helps explain how computers communicate. He also studied how to keep computer messages secret through cryptography.

Andrew Yao had a very long journey through many schools. He was born in Shanghai in 1946. His family moved to Hong Kong and then to Taiwan. He graduated from National Taiwan University in 1967.

Then he went to Harvard University in the United States. He earned a doctorate in physics there in 1972. He earned another doctorate in computer science in 1975. He studied at many places like MIT, Stanford, and Berkeley.

Many big awards show how important his work is. In 1996, he won the Knuth Prize. In 2000, he won the ACM Turing Award. Many people call this the Nobel Prize of computer science.

He also won the Kyoto Prize in 2021. Yao was a professor at Princeton University for many years. In 2015, he became an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He now leads the IIIS at Tsinghua University.

Today, Yao helps us think about the future of AI. AI stands for artificial intelligence.

In May 2024, he wrote a paper about AI risks. He worked with other experts like Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton. They want to make sure AI is safe for everyone. They asked leaders to make smart rules for new technology. This helps keep the world safe as computers get smarter.
