Donald Knuth is a famous American mathematician and computer scientist. He is a professor at Stanford University. Many people call him the "father of the analysis of algorithms." An algorithm is a set of steps used to solve a problem. Knuth studies how well these steps work on a computer. He looks at how much time or memory an algorithm needs. This study helps make computers work much faster.

Knuth has always loved finding clever ways to solve puzzles. When he was in eighth grade, he entered a word contest. He had to find words made from letters in a specific phrase. The judges only found 2,500 words. Knuth used a huge dictionary to find over 4,500 words! His school won a new television and candy bars as a prize. Later, he made a program to help a basketball team. He gave players values to guess how many points they might score.

His journey in math and computers began in college. He studied physics at the Case Institute of Technology in Ohio. While there, he learned about an early computer called the IBM 650. He even rewrote the code for that machine to make it better. In 1960, he earned two degrees at the same time. He later earned a PhD in mathematics from Caltech in 1963. He worked as a consultant for the Burroughs Corporation during this time.

Knuth is a very important writer for scientists. He began writing a huge series called The Art of Computer Programming. He first planned to write just one book. He soon realized he needed seven volumes to cover everything! The first volume came out in 1968. He also wrote a book called Concrete Mathematics. He even wrote a story about math called Surreal Numbers. In 1974, he won the ACM Turing Award. This award is like the Nobel Prize for computer science.

Knuth also created tools to make computer work look beautiful. He was frustrated with how computers printed words in the 1970s. To fix this, he created a system called TeX. This system helps computers typeset text very clearly. He also made a language called METAFONT to design beautiful fonts. He even created the Computer Modern family of typefaces. He also believes that programming should be like writing great literature.
