Tufte wants people to see patterns in numbers. He believes that good design helps us understand the world. His work helps us turn messy data into clear stories.

He has special ideas about how to make good charts. Tufte dislikes something he calls "chartjunk." This is useless decoration that gets in the way of facts. He also talks about the "data-ink ratio." This means using ink to show data instead of extra patterns.

He wants graphics to be very dense with information. This lets people see small details and big trends at once. He thinks every data point should have a real value.

His career has been full of interesting changes. He was born in 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in Beverly Hills, California. He studied at Stanford University and Yale University.

Tufte also created new ways to look at information. He likes using "small multiples." These are many small charts placed side by side. This makes it easy to compare different groups of data. He also helped popularize "sparklines." A sparkline is a tiny, simple graph that fits inside a sentence. These help show how things like the stock market change over time.

He is not just a math expert. Tufte is also a sculptor who works with metal and stone. He even opened an art gallery called ET Modern in New York City.

He has also been a critic of how people use PowerPoint. He says it can sometimes hide important details in bullet points. In 2010, President Barack Obama picked him for a special government panel. This panel helped ensure transparency in how money was used. He continues to show us how to see the world clearly.
