Sometimes, a long list of numbers can be hard to understand. It is difficult to see the big picture when facts are just in a table. William Playfair found a much better way to show these facts. He believed that charts could communicate ideas better than rows of numbers. He used shapes and lines to turn data into pictures. This helped people see patterns and changes very quickly. His work changed how we look at information forever.

Playfair invented several ways to draw data. He created the line chart to show how things change over time. A line chart connects points to show a path or a trend. He also made the bar chart to compare different amounts. These charts use bars of different heights to show size. In 1786, he used these to show trade between nations. He also invented the pie chart to show parts of a whole.
