Bar chart

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A bar chart is a clever way to see information. It uses rectangular bars to show different groups. These groups are called categories. Categories can be things like shoe sizes or months of the year.

The bars can stand up tall or lie flat. A vertical chart is often called a column chart. The height or length of each bar shows a value. This makes it easy to see which group is bigger. A tall bar means a large amount. A short bar means a small amount.

Charts work by using two different lines called axes. One axis shows the specific categories you are comparing. The other axis represents a measured value.

You can arrange the bars in different ways. Sometimes there is no natural order for the groups. If you put them from highest to lowest, it is called a Pareto chart. It is usually best to start the scale at zero. Starting at a different number can make small differences look much larger than they are. However, some things like temperature do not always use zero.

History tells us about the people who first used these tools. Many people believe William Playfair invented the bar chart. He lived from 1759 to 1824. He made a famous graph in his book, The Commercial and Political Atlas. This chart showed the exports and imports of Scotland. It covered the year from Christmas 1780 to Christmas 1781.

Some very old drawings might be early versions. These were found in a book called The Latitude of Forms. These drawings were made about 300 years before Playfair.

There are many ways to build a complex chart. A grouped bar chart puts two or more bars side by side. These bars often use different colors to show different things. For example, a shop owner might use colors to show two different stores.

A stacked bar chart is a bit different. It puts the bars on top of each other. This shows how different parts add up to one whole total. These are not good for data that has both positive and negative numbers. Both types keep the bars in a specific sequence.

Some special charts even change the width of the bars. These are called variable-width or variwide bar charts. In these charts, the bars do not all have the same width.

The area of the rectangle is found by multiplying the sides. This can help show even more information at once. You might see a chart about greenhouse gas emissions using this method. It is a way to make data easy to see and understand. Bar charts help us turn numbers into pictures.
