He made a famous graph in his book, The Commercial and Political Atlas. This chart showed the exports and imports of Scotland. It covered the year from Christmas 1780 to Christmas 1781.

There are exceptions to this rule, however. For example, temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit use an arbitrary zero. Logarithmic charts also do not use a standard zero because that value would be infinitely far away.

History shows that different people have contributed to these visual tools. Many sources credit William Playfair, who lived from 1759 to 1824, with inventing the bar chart. His work included a graph titled "Exports and Imports of Scotland to and from different parts for one Year from Christmas 1780 to Christmas 1781." This appeared in his book, The Commercial and Political Atlas. Interestingly, some "proto bar charts" appeared much earlier. Diagrams in a book called The Latitude of Forms showed the velocity of accelerating objects. These were published about 300 years before Playfair's work.

More complex data can be shown using grouped or stacked bar charts. In a grouped, or clustered, bar chart, two or more bars are placed side by side for each category. These bars are often color-coded to represent different variables.

For instance, a business owner could use different colors to compare revenue from two separate stores across different months. Grouped charts usually keep the same order for the bars within every grouping.

Stacked bar charts, also called composite bar charts, work differently. Instead of placing bars side by side, they stack them on top of each other.

The total height of the stack shows the combined result of all the parts. This is useful for showing how different sub-types contribute to a total amount. For example, a chart could show total numbers with internal colors representing participation levels. However, stacked bar charts are not suitable for data sets that contain both positive and negative values. They also maintain a consistent sequence of data within each bar.

There is also a specialized version called a variable-width or variwide bar chart. In these charts, the bars do not have a uniform width.

Instead, the area of each rectangular bar is the arithmetic product of its sides. This means the area represents a relationship between two different quantities. One example is a chart relating country populations to per-person CO2 emissions. In such a chart, the rectangle area represents the total emissions for that country. This method adds a layer of mathematical depth to the visual comparison.
