A timeline is a list of events shown in order. This order is called chronology. Most timelines use a graphic design with a long bar. Dates sit next to this bar to show when things happened. You can use many different scales for time. A timeline for evolution might cover millions of years. A timeline for a tiny explosion might only show milliseconds.

In the past, people wrote lists of names and events. These were called annals. They did not always separate human events from nature. In Europe, people used tables starting in the 4th century. A man named Eusebius made famous tables. He put different histories in side-by-side columns. His work helped show world history through a Christian view. These tables were easy to copy and print.
