It is an original item made during the time being studied. These sources can be many different things. They might be a diary, a letter, or a manuscript. They can even be objects like coins, paintings, or old buildings.

A primary source gives us direct information about a topic. It acts as an original piece of evidence for researchers. This makes it very important for understanding history.

How we use these sources can change their name. A source is called "primary" or "secondary" depending on the goal of the study. For example, a person's memoir is a primary source if you study their life. However, that same book becomes a secondary source if you use it to study a whole culture.

A secondary source is usually written after an event has happened. These sources often use hindsight to explain or comment on the original facts. Sometimes, a source can even switch roles if new information is found. If a lost letter is discovered, a document that was once primary might become secondary.

Different types of experts use these clues in different ways. In history, people look for eyewitness accounts or official reports. In science, a primary source is the original report of new data and results.

People studying religion might look at ancient texts or descriptions of rituals. Even a play or a novel can be a source for cultural history. Journalists also use primary sources, like people who saw an event happen. This helps them get the most direct knowledge possible.

Finding these treasures can be a big job. Many primary sources are kept in special places like archives, museums, or libraries. Some are held in private hands, while others are in public buildings.

You can even find many of them online today. The Library of Congress and the National Archives have digital collections. The Internet Archive and Europeana also help people see these items from home. This makes it easier for everyone to explore the past.

Historians rely on these original items to do real research. Using only secondary sources can make a history book less reliable. Primary sources allow researchers to see the past without a filter.

However, these clues can sometimes be hard to understand. Old words might have different meanings than they do today. Some pieces of the past are also missing or broken. Even so, primary sources remain the most important way to learn the truth.
