Periodization

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Historians study the past by grouping time into named blocks. This process is called periodization. It helps people understand how things change over time. It also shows how one event might cause another.

These blocks are not always perfect. It can be hard to pick an exact start or end date. Sometimes the lines between periods are a bit blurry. Still, these names provide a helpful framework for study. They make a huge amount of history easier to organize.

Many periods are named after the tools people used. In archaeology, experts look at material culture to group the past. This includes the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. These names show how technology changed for humans. In 1865, John Lubbock split the Stone Age into three parts. These were the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods.

Even with new science like radiocarbon dating, these old names are still used today.

Other periods are named after famous leaders or big events. You might hear about the Napoleonic Era or the Victorian Era. Some names come from specific ruling families. For example, the Meiji Era was in Japan. The Jacksonian Era was in America.

People also use "pre-" and "post-" to mark big changes. We use "pre-war" and "post-war" to talk about World War II. This shows how a single event can change the whole world.

Some names carry special feelings. The word Renaissance means a "rebirth" of art and learning. The Italian Renaissance happened around 1500 to 1530. It featured famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Other places had their own versions, like the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. Some names can also sound negative. The term "Gothic" was once used to describe things people did not like. The word "baroque" actually means an irregular or misshapen pearl.

An Italian poet named Petrarch helped shape how we see history. He lived from 1304 to 1374. Petrarch created the idea of the "Middle Ages." He saw it as a time between the ancient world and his own.

He also thought of a "Dark Age" that happened before his time. Today, many historians use different names to be more accurate. They might use terms like the Early Modern Period instead. This helps show how different parts of the world connect to each other.
