Prehistory is the long period of time before humans began using writing.

Because there are no written records, we call this era anonymous. We cannot read the names of leaders or nations from this time. Instead, we learn about the past through material things left behind. These items include stone tools, bones, and other artifacts.

By studying these remains, we can piece together how early people lived. It is like solving a giant puzzle without an instruction manual.

Scientists use many different tools to study this era. Archaeologists dig into the earth to find objects in their original places. They work with other experts like biologists and geologists to understand the environment.

One very important step is dating the finds to see how old they are. Many researchers use a method called radiocarbon dating to find out the age of organic materials. Other experts study DNA in bones to see how people were related. This mix of science helps us see a clearer picture of the past.

Prehistory started when human-like beings first appeared on Earth.

The exact start date depends on where you look in the world. In Africa, signs of humans appear around 2.5 million years ago. In Europe, the first signs are found around 1.3 million years ago. The end of prehistory happened when writing was invented. This did not happen everywhere at once. For example, writing began in Egypt around 3100 BCE. In New Guinea, the prehistoric era ended much later, in the 1870s.

In many parts of the world, people divide prehistory into three ages.

These are the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. The Stone Age lasted for a huge amount of time. It covers about 99% of all human history. Within the Stone Age, there was the Palaeolithic, or Old Stone Age. During this time, early humans used stone tools and learned to control fire.

Later came the Mesolithic, which was a middle period between stone and farming.

These ancient changes connect to the world we know today. The way people moved and found food shaped how societies grew. Some groups lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers who moved to find food. Others eventually stayed in one place to start farming.

This shift led to the first big civilizations in places like Mesopotamia and Egypt. These cultures were among the first to develop writing. Once they wrote things down, they moved from prehistory into recorded history.
