Prehistory is the vast era of human existence before the invention of writing systems.

Because there are no written records, this period is often described as anonymous. We cannot read the names of specific leaders or nations from this time. Instead, researchers must study the activities of archaeological cultures. This means they look at material processes, remains, and artifacts. The term "prehistory" is sometimes called pre-literary history. It marks the time between the first stone tools and the start of recorded history. The first writing systems appeared roughly 5,200 years ago. However, the transition from prehistory to history happened at different times globally.

Because writing spread slowly, the end of prehistory varies by region. When a culture is written about by others but lacks its own writing, it is called protohistory. This distinction is vital for archaeologists. They use modern labels like "Neanderthal" or "Iron Age" to organize their findings. These labels are sometimes debated by scholars. Still, they are necessary for conveying information about prehistoric peoples. Without these names, it would be difficult to distinguish between different groups. Prehistory is defined by what we can touch and find in the earth.

To understand this era, scientists use many different disciplines. Archaeologists and physical anthropologists are the primary researchers. They use excavation and geographic surveys to interpret the behavior of non-literate peoples. They often work alongside natural scientists to find answers. For example, biologists and geologists provide context about the ancient environment. Human population geneticists and historical linguists also offer valuable insights. Even paleontology and molecular genetics help reveal the past. These experts study how objects and ideas passed among prehistoric people.

A key step in this research is dating the evidence. Scientists use many reliable techniques to determine how old an object is. One common method is radiocarbon dating. This technique helps find the age of organic materials. Other researchers use forensic chemical analysis to find the origin of materials. Genetic analysis of bones can reveal kinship and physical traits. Some experts even reconstruct ancient spoken languages to understand how people communicated. These scientific tools allow us to build a timeline of human development.

In Eurasia, historians often use the three-age system to divide prehistory. This system names periods based on predominant tool-making technologies. The three stages are the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. Some areas also include the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age, between the Stone and Bronze Ages. The Stone Age was incredibly long, covering about 99% of human history. It lasted roughly 3.4 million years. It ended between 4000 BCE and 2000 BCE when metalworking began. This system is used widely in Eurasia and North Africa.

The Stone Age is further divided into several important stages. The Palaeolithic, or Old Stone Age, began with the first stone tools. These tools date back about 3.3 million years to sites in Kenya. During the Lower Palaeolithic, early hominins began using stone implements. Later, during the Middle Palaeolithic, evidence shows humans used fire. Fire allowed people to cook, stay warm, and provide light. The Upper Paleolithic saw the rise of organized settlements and art.

Following this was the Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age. This period occurred after glaciers retreated about 10,000 years ago. It was a time of transition before the rise of agriculture.

Prehistoric timelines vary greatly depending on the location. In Africa, human presence is dated to about 2.5 million years ago. In Asia, it is dated to about 1.8 million years ago. In Europe, signs of humans appear around 1.3 million years ago. The end of prehistory also depends on when writing was adopted locally. In Egypt, prehistory ended around 3100 BCE. In New Guinea, it ended much more recently in the 1870s. In Australia, the end of prehistory is often marked by the year 1788. These differences show that human progress did not happen at the same speed everywhere.
