Human history is the comprehensive record of our species. It tracks our journey from prehistory to the present day. This study uses many different academic tools. Researchers use archaeology to study physical remains. They use anthropology to understand human cultures. Linguistics helps us study how languages change. Genetics allows us to look at our biological past. By combining these fields, we can reconstruct how our world became what it is today.

Our biological story began in Africa. Early ancestors called hominins appeared about 7 to 5 million years ago. These ancestors developed bipedalism, which is the ability to walk on two legs. Around 3.3 million years ago, they began using stone tools. This marked the start of the Paleolithic era. The genus Homo eventually evolved from Australopithecus. Homo habilis appeared by 2.3 million years ago. This species had a brain 50% larger than its predecessors. Later, Homo erectus became the first to leave Africa.

Modern humans, known as Homo sapiens, evolved in Africa around 300,000 years ago. We became anatomically modern by 125,000 years ago. Early humans were hunter-gatherers who lived nomadic lives. They moved frequently to find food. They also developed complex skills like making jewelry and cave art. One major change was the development of syntactic language. This improved our ability to communicate complex ideas. Between 70,000 and 50,000 years ago, a group migrated out of Africa. They eventually colonized every continent except Antarctica.

The Neolithic Revolution changed how we lived. This transition to agriculture began around 10,000 BCE. It happened independently in at least 11 different centers. In Mesopotamia, people grew wheat and barley by 8500 BCE. In China, rice and millet were domesticated in river valleys. People also began the systematic husbandry of animals. This means they raised animals like sheep, goats, and pigs. Agriculture created food surpluses. These extra food supplies allowed populations to grow much larger. People stopped moving and built permanent settlements.

As societies grew, the first great civilizations emerged during the Bronze Age. These societies often formed near major rivers. Mesopotamia developed around 3300 BCE near the Tigris and Euphrates. Egyptian civilization rose along the Nile around 3200 BCE. The Norte Chico civilization appeared in Peru by 3100 BCE. Other major centers arose in the Indus Valley and China. These civilizations shared several key features. They had central governments and complex economies. They also built monumental buildings and used metal tools.

Writing was a vital tool for these growing societies. It helped people manage cities and keep records. Writing developed independently in at least four places. Mesopotamia created cuneiform, which used simplified pictographs. Egypt developed hieroglyphs to record information. China used writing during the Shang dynasty. In Mesoamerica, writing appeared by 650 BCE. Writing allowed for the preservation of ideas across generations. It also helped manage large-scale trade networks. This created a form of early globalization.
