He spent his life studying big ideas about art and politics. He was a specialist in aesthetics, which is the study of beauty. He also focused on conservative views. These are ideas about protecting traditions and social structures. Scruton wrote more than 50 books on many subjects. He wrote about architecture, religion, and how music works. He saw people in Paris overturning cars and smashing windows. This event made him feel a surge of political anger. He did not want to pull things down. Instead, he wanted to conserve and protect western civilization. This experience led him to embrace conservatism. He wanted to find ways to defend the things people value.

His academic life was very busy and spanned many years. He taught at Birkbeck College in London for 21 years.
