Viktor Shklovsky was a very important thinker of the twentieth century.

He studied how people make art and stories. This work is called literary theory. He was a major leader in a group called Russian Formalism. This group looked closely at how books are actually built. Shklovsky believed that art is a special kind of technique. He wanted to help people see the world in new ways. His ideas changed how we think about reading and watching films.

Shklovsky had a famous idea called ostranenie. This is often called defamiliarization in English. It means making something feel strange or new again. Sometimes we see things so often that we stop noticing them. He thought art should break this habit. Art should make us look at things as if for the first time.

He also taught the difference between a story and a plot. He called the sequence of events the fabula. He called the way those events are shown the syuzhet. This helps us see how writers organize their work.

Shklovsky was born in St. Petersburg, Russia.

His father was a mathematician from a Jewish family. His mother was of German-Russian origin. He went to St. Petersburg University to study. During the First World War, he joined the Russian Army. He worked as a driving trainer for armored cars. In 1916, he helped start a group called OPOYAZ. This group studied the language used in poetry. He lived through many big changes in his country.

His life was full of many different jobs and places.

He served as an assistant Commissar during the war. He even went to Persia for a time. In 1922, he had to flee to Germany to stay safe. He wrote a book of memories in Berlin in 1923. Later, he returned to the Soviet Union. He wrote many books, like his Theory of Prose in 1925. He also wrote scripts for many Soviet films. He worked on movies like The House on Trubnaya in 1928.

Shklovsky's work connects many different kinds of art. He was one of the first people to write seriously about film. He was a close friend of the director Sergei Eisenstein. His ideas about stories helped many other thinkers later on. People like Tzvetan Todorov helped share his work with the West. Even today, scholars study his ideas about how art works. He died in Moscow in 1984. He left behind a huge legacy for writers and film makers everywhere.
