He belonged to a group called the Futurists. These artists wanted to change how people saw the world. They wanted to move away from old ways of writing. Kruchyonykh was a leader in a style called Cubo-Futurism. He worked with many famous friends like Vladimir Mayakovsky. They wanted to throw old writers off the "steamboat of modernity." This means they wanted to move toward the future. He believed art should feel new and surprising.

Kruchyonykh is most famous for inventing a style called zaum. Zaum is a type of poetry that uses nonsense words. He did not want to use words that were worn out. For example, he thought the word "lily" had lost its power. He would call a lily "éuy" to make it feel pure again.

He even tried writing a poem using only vowels. He also made special books called samopismo. In these books, the words and the pictures are joined together. These books were often made by hand using a method called lithography.

His life began in the Kherson region of the Russian Empire. He was born on February 21, 1886, to peasant parents.

At first, he wanted to be a painter. He studied at the Odessa Art School. Later, he went to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He made a living by drawing funny pictures called caricatures. In 1912, he decided to become a poet instead. He lived through a famous time called the Russian Silver Age of literature.

Kruchyonykh worked on many exciting projects with his friends. He helped write an opera called Victory Over the Sun.

Kazimir Malevich made the sets for this show. Mikhail Matyushin wrote the music for it. The play was very strange and used zaum words. The actors wore costumes made of cardboard. There was even a real airplane in the performance! The show happened at the Luna Park Theatre in St. Petersburg. Many people in the audience were angry and booed the show. In 1916, he published his famous book called Universal War.

His art was often very shocking to people. Sometimes audiences became so angry that he had to defend himself. Once, he even used his shoes to fight back a crowd. Later in life, the government made it hard for him to publish. He had to make his own books by himself. He eventually worked as an archivist to earn money. He spent time collecting and selling rare old books. He died from pneumonia in 1968. Today, his wild ideas still inspire some musicians.
