Mikhail Bakhtin was a famous Russian philosopher and literary critic. He spent his life studying language, ethics, and how books work. His ideas were very broad and touched many different subjects. These included history, sociology, and even psychology. Many different types of scholars found his work very helpful. They used his ideas to understand how people think and act. Even though he lived a long time ago, his thoughts still matter today.

Bakhtin had a very interesting way of looking at the world. One of his big ideas was called dialogism. This idea is about how people use talk and dialogue. He also thought about a concept called unfinalizability. This means a person can never be fully defined by others. You are always changing and growing in new ways. He believed that no one can ever truly capture your whole self. This idea helped him explain the stories written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. He also wrote about how our identity is shared with others.

Bakhtin's journey began in a place called Oryol, Russia. He grew up in a family with noble roots. His father worked as a bank manager in different cities. Because of this, Bakhtin lived in many places like Vilnius and Odessa. In 1913, he joined a university in Odessa to study history. Later, he moved to Petrograd Imperial University to be near his brother. It was during these years that he began to form his own deep ideas. He was greatly influenced by a teacher named F. F. Zelinsky.

His professional life was filled with both hard work and hard times. In 1918, he finished his studies and became a teacher in Nevel. There, he started the "Bakhtin Circle" with a group of smart friends. They met to discuss religion, politics, and books. In 1929, he published his first major work about Dostoevsky. However, the Soviet secret police arrested him in late 1928. Because of his bone disease, his sentence was changed to exile. He and his wife lived in Kazakhstan for six years.

Bakhtin's life shows how ideas can survive even through great struggle. He faced many problems with his health and the government. He had to have a leg removed in 1938 due to illness. Many of his written papers were lost or hidden for a long time. Some manuscripts even disappeared during the German invasion in 1941. Because of this, some details of his life are hard to know for sure. It was only after he died in 1975 that his work became famous. Today, we can finally see the full reach of his amazing mind.
