He studied how people use language. He also thought about ethics, which is the study of right and wrong. He was a philosopher and a critic of books.

In his early years, Bakhtin joined a group of smart friends. They met to talk about many topics. This group was called the Bakhtin Circle. They loved to debate ideas about religion and politics.

Bakhtin had some hard times in his life. He had a bone disease. A doctor had to remove one of his legs. He also faced trouble from the government. He was sent away to live in a place called Kazakhstan for six years. During this time, he still wrote many important essays.

One of his big ideas was called dialogism. This idea is about how people talk to each other. He also wrote about a concept called unfinalizability. This means a person can never be fully defined by others. We are always changing and growing. His ideas became very popular after he died in 1975.
