He lived his whole life in the city of Moscow. He was a poet, a philosopher, and a theologian. He was also an amateur artist who made art for fun. Khomyakov helped start a group called the Slavophiles. He worked with another man named Ivan Kireyevsky to lead this movement. They wanted to share special ideas about Russian life and faith.

Khomyakov had a very important idea called sobornost. This is a word that means togetherness or a symphony. He believed that people should live in unity and love. To him, the Russian peasants were great examples of this. He thought they were very humble people. He also thought the Russian village community, called the obshchina, showed what sobornost looked like. He believed true freedom comes from being together in love.

He had strong views about how the world works. Khomyakov did not like capitalism or socialism. He thought these ideas came from the West. He believed the West focused too much on competition between people. He thought this was a mistake for the human spirit. He felt the West failed to solve spiritual problems. In his view, the West chose competition instead of cooperation.

Khomyakov also had deep ideas about the Church. He did not think the Church was just a group of rules. He believed the Church was a living organism. It was a unity held together by love and freedom. He thought you could not explain the Church with just math or logic. He said the Church is known by those who are part of it. To him, the Church is a mystery found through faith.

One day, Khomyakov tried to help a sick person. Because of this, he caught a disease called cholera. He died from this illness and was buried in the Danilov Monastery. Later, the Soviets moved him to the Novodevichy Cemetery. His books were printed by his friends after he died. His ideas helped many famous Russian thinkers. These included writers like Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Vladimir Solovyov.
