This battle was very important because it decided the war. It resulted in the capture of the French leader, Emperor Napoleon III. It also led to over 100,000 French soldiers being taken prisoner. This loss helped Prussia and its allies win the war. Even though the battle ended, fighting in France continued for a while longer.

The battle happened because the French army was caught in a trap.

The French Army of Châlons had 130,000 men. They were led by Marshal Patrice de MacMahon and Napoleon III. They were trying to reach the city of Metz to help another army. However, the Prussian armies moved to surround them. This is called an encirclement. Prussian leaders like Helmuth von Moltke used their troops to close in from many sides. The French were caught in a pincer movement, which means they were squeezed from both sides.

Prussian troops attacked several places at once. They fought for control of the village of Bazeilles. In Bazeilles, French Marines fought from inside stone houses. Prussian artillery, which are large guns, shelled the buildings into rubble. At the same time, other Prussian groups attacked near a place called La Moncelle. The French tried to fight back and even had a brief rally. But the Prussian forces were too strong and kept arriving on the field.

By the afternoon, the French position was very difficult.

Prussian guns were placed on hills overlooking the French army. They fired from many different directions. The French troops tried to find an escape route through a place called Floing. However, the German troops blocked their path. Some French soldiers sought cover in the Bois de la Garenne forest. But the Prussian Guards captured the forest by 2:30 PM. Seeing that they could not win, Napoleon III raised a white flag to signal surrender.

The results of the battle changed history for France.

On September 2, the French army officially surrendered. About 104,000 men became prisoners of war. Napoleon III was also taken as a prisoner. This caused the French government to change completely. A new group called the Government of National Defense was formed in Paris. They continued to fight for five more months. However, the defeat at Sedan made it very hard for France to win the war.
