Many people remember this battle because it was so large. It changed how people thought about the costs of war.

The German army planned the attack very carefully. They wanted to capture the Meuse Heights. These hills were a great defensive position. From there, they could use big guns called artillery to fire on Verdun.

The German leader, Erich von Falkenhayn, had a specific plan. He hoped the French would send all their extra troops to defend Verdun. He believed this would wear down the French army. The Germans wanted to use heavy artillery to win the fight.

Verdun had been an important place for many centuries. Long ago, the leader Attila the Hun tried to take it. Later, the town was part of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the 1870s, people built strong fortresses around the area. These forts were made of thick concrete and steel. Some forts even had special sand cushions to protect them.

Only four days later, the Germans captured Fort Douaumont. A French leader named Philippe Pétain told his soldiers not to retreat. This meant they had to stay and fight. The battle moved between many different forts and hills. In June, the Germans captured Fort Vaux. The fighting was very intense and lasted for many months.

By the end of the year, the French fought back. They launched counter-offensives to take back the land.
