Germany started the attack to win the war. They wanted to take the hills near Verdun. They also wanted to use big guns, called artillery, to hurt the French army. The Germans hoped the French would send all their extra troops to Verdun. They thought this would make the French army weak.

The fighting was very hard. The Germans took Fort Douaumont early on. But the French fought back. A leader named Philippe Pétain told his men not to retreat. This means they must not run away. The battle moved between many forts and hills. In the summer, the French had to help at another fight called the Somme. Later, the French fought back. They took back many forts, including Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux. The battle was very costly for both sides. It showed how much people could endure.
