This area is a peninsula in Turkey. The Allied powers included Britain, France, and Russia. They wanted to control the Dardanelles straits. These straits are narrow paths of water. Controlling them would help reach the city of Constantinople.

First, the Allies tried to use ships. In March 1915, a large fleet attacked the straits. Many ships hit mines under the water. These mines are hidden bombs. The naval attack did not work.
