The French Revolutionary Wars were a series of huge military conflicts. These wars began because of the French Revolution. They lasted from 1792 until 1802. France fought against many other strong lands. These included Great Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. The wars changed how people thought about power in Europe. They also spread new ideas about how a country should work. At first, the fighting stayed mostly in Europe. Later, the wars grew to include many other parts of the world.

To fight these wars, France used a new way to build an army. They used mass conscription to get soldiers. This meant they called up a huge number of people from the population. This helped France create a very large and powerful military. This large army helped France win many battles. They took over lands in the Italian peninsula and the Rhineland. They also took control of the Low Countries. These victories helped spread revolutionary ideas across much of Europe.

The wars are split into two main parts. The first part is the War of the First Coalition. This lasted from 1792 to 1797. It began when Austria and Prussia threatened the French king. France declared war on them in the spring of 1792. A big battle at Valmy in September 1792 helped the French. This victory gave the people more courage. Later, a general named Napoleon Bonaparte rose to fame. He led successful campaigns in Italy starting in April 1796.

The second part is the War of the Second Coalition. This began in 1798. It started when Napoleon led a French invasion of Egypt. While France was in the Middle East, other countries tried to take back land. The allies won some battles in Italy and Switzerland. However, the French won a big victory at Zurich in 1799. This caused Russia to leave the war. Napoleon also won battles at the Pyramids and Mount Tabor.

Napoleon eventually returned to France in the autumn of 1799. He took control of the government as consul. He reorganized the army to fight the Austrians again. In June 1800, the French won at the Battle of Marengo. Another big win happened at Hohenlinden in Bavaria. This forced Austria to sign the Treaty of Lunéville in 1801. Finally, Britain signed the Treaty of Amiens in 1802. This ended the Revolutionary Wars for a short time.
