The ancien régime was the political and social system of the Kingdom of France. It was the way the country was run for many years. This system lasted until the French Revolution changed everything. In 1790, the old feudal system of the nobility was ended. Then, in 1792, King Louis XVI was executed and France became a republic. Today, people use the term "ancien régime" to describe any old system that is no longer used.

This system worked through a mix of many different powers. Kings often tried to be absolute monarchs. This meant they wanted to issue orders through special letters called lettres de cachet. However, the country had many overlapping rules and divisions. These included legal, judicial, and religious groups that all had their own rights. To gain more control, kings replaced personal systems with new state institutions. They appointed officials called intendants to represent royal power in the provinces.

History shows that many leaders worked to build this system. The House of Valois tried to reform the country but faced the Wars of Religion from 1562 to 1598. Later, the House of Bourbon took control. Kings like Henry IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV focused on making the state more centralized. Louis XIV was a very powerful ruler known as the Sun King. He used his power to extend France's borders and strengthen its frontiers.

Wars were a huge part of life during this time. These conflicts required massive amounts of money from the people. The kings raised funds through taxes on land and a tax on salt. For example, during the Nine Years' War from 1688 to 1697, France fought many nations. Later, the War of the Spanish Succession lasted from 1701 to 1713. This war started because King Charles II of Spain had no children. His death led to a fight between the French Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs.

Even though kings held much power, the system faced many hard jobs. France often struggled with money and debt from fighting wars. The tax system was not very efficient and the treasury was often short. While France struggled, other places like Great Britain built very strong financial systems. By the time the Revolution arrived, the old way of life was changing fast. The ancien régime was eventually replaced by a new way of governing.
