The ancien régime was the political and social system of the Kingdom of France. It represents the specific way the country was organized before the French Revolution. This system was eventually overturned by massive social and political changes. In 1790, the French government abolished the feudal system of the nobility. By 1792, the system ended completely when King Louis XVI was executed. This event led to the declaration of a republic. Today, the term "ancien régime" serves as a common metaphor. It describes any mode or system that is no longer in use.

The structure of the ancien régime was complex and often irregular. While kings sought to be absolute monarchs, the system had many overlapping parts. These included administrative, legal, judicial, and ecclesiastic divisions. Each division often held its own specific rights or prerogatives. This meant that power was not always clear or unified. The French nobility also fought to keep their influence in local courts. They contested the king's attempts to centralize power through various internal conflicts.

To gain more control, the French state moved toward centralization. This process involved replacing personal patronage systems with institutional ones. Instead of relying on personal ties to nobles, the state built formal structures. The crown began appointing intendants to represent royal power in the provinces. These officials helped undermine the local control held by regional nobles. The royal court also relied more heavily on the parlements. These were regional courts that acted as judges and royal counselors.

Centralization was driven largely by the needs of royal finances and war. Fighting wars and managing territory required enormous sums of money. The monarchy raised these funds through specific taxes. One major tax was the land tax. Another important source of revenue was the tax on salt. These funds were necessary to support the military and the state. However, the taxation system was often inefficient. Tax farmers frequently kept much of the money collected. This left the royal treasury constantly short of the funds it needed.

History shows several stages of state-building through different royal houses. The House of Valois attempted to reform and re-establish control over France. However, their efforts were hindered by the Wars of Religion from 1562 to 1598. Later, the House of Bourbon took a different approach. Kings like Henry IV and Louis XIII focused on administrative centralization. Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, brought the system to an absolutist form. He used his power to extend French influence and stabilize its frontiers.

Warfare played a massive role in shaping the ancien régime. The Nine Years' War from 1688 to 1697 was a truly global conflict. France fought a coalition including Austria, the Dutch Republic, Spain, and England. Later, the War of the Spanish Succession lasted from 1701 to 1713. This war began because King Charles II of Spain had no children. A conflict arose between the French Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs over the Spanish throne. The resulting Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 changed many borders in Europe.

Financial stability varied greatly during this period. After the wars, France entered a peaceful interlude from 1715 to 1740. However, the cost of previous conflicts was very high. In 1683, indirect taxes brought in 118,000,000 livres. By 1714, these revenues had dropped to only 46,000,000 livres. The banking system in Paris remained undeveloped during this time. Consequently, the treasury had to borrow money at very high interest rates. This contrasted with Great Britain, which had a very competent financial system.

The ancien régime was a system of deep social stratification. It was characterized by rigid hierarchies and traditional institutions. Some observers described it as a society encrusted with anachronisms. They argued it was incapable of self-modernization due to its many layers. This social structure eventually faced the pressure of the Revolution. The old ways of governing and taxing were replaced by new ideas. This transition marked the end of the monarchy and the birth of a new era in France.
