Louis XIV was the King of France from 1643 until 1715.

He is a primary symbol of the Age of Absolutism in Europe. This was a period when monarchs held supreme, centralized power. Louis XIV styled himself as "Le Roi Soleil," or "The Sun King." This title portrayed him as the center of the French universe. He believed in the divine right of kings. This doctrine suggested that his authority came directly from God.

His reign lasted 72 years and 110 days. This remains the longest reign of any monarch in history.

Louis XIV's path to power began during a very unstable childhood. He was born on 5 September 1638 at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Because he was a child, a regency council ruled on his behalf. Queen Anne served as the head of this council. She appointed Cardinal Mazarin as her chief minister to manage daily policy. During this time, France faced a civil war known as the Fronde.

This rebellion involved the nobility and the Parlement of Paris. Angry mobs even broke into the royal palace to demand to see the young king. These chaotic events shaped Louis's lifelong distrust of the high aristocracy and Paris.

In 1661, following the death of Cardinal Mazarin, Louis XIV began his personal rule. He moved to eliminate the remnants of feudalism in France. He wanted a centralized state governed from a single capital. To control the nobility, he compelled them to reside at his Palace of Versailles.

By bringing the aristocracy to his court, he successfully pacified them. This system of absolute monarchy endured until the French Revolution. He also enforced religious uniformity through the Catholic Church. In 1685, he revoked the Edict of Nantes.

This action abolished the rights of the Huguenot Protestant minority. It led to the dragonnades, which forced many Protestants to convert or emigrate. This effectively destroyed the French Protestant community.

Warfare was a defining element of Louis XIV's foreign policy. He was driven by a personal ambition for glory and power. He described his motivations as a mix of commerce, revenge, and pique. During his reign, France emerged as the leading European power.

He fought several major continental conflicts. These included the Franco-Dutch War and the Nine Years' War. He also fought the War of the Spanish Succession, which began in 1701.

He also engaged in shorter conflicts like the War of Devolution. While these wars expanded French influence, they also strained the nation's resources. He taught his diplomats to seek tactical and strategic advantages for the military.

Despite the cost of war, Louis XIV was a massive patron of the arts. His court at Versailles defined the Baroque style of French architecture.

He supported many famous creators during his lifetime. The playwright Molière and the composer Lully were among his notable supporters. The painter Le Brun and the architect Le Nôtre also contributed to French classicism. This era is often called the "century of Louis XIV." He also focused on scientific advancement by founding the French Academy of Sciences.

Additionally, he oversaw the construction of the Canal du Midi in Southern France.

The impact of his long reign was massive and complex. He transformed France into a centralized, absolute monarchy. However, his constant warfare left a heavy burden on the kingdom. By the time he died in 1715, France was in major debt. This debt was largely due to the War of the Spanish Succession.

He left his great-grandson, Louis XV, a kingdom that was powerful but war-weary. His life connected the era of feudalism to the era of the modern centralized state. His influence on culture, science, and government shaped Europe for generations.
